Context :

• The eighth annual pulicat day wil be observed on February 2 at Pulicat to create awareness among people about the importance of protecting the lagoon.
• The day is celebrated as the world wetlands day, with activities like catamaran race, rangoli competition,quiz and drawing competition for children, heritage walk and folklore programs.
• The wetland was one of the northeast monsoon cloud attracting regions in the country. It was a centre of cotton route once.
• The economic boom and unplanned industrial expansion have led to exploitation of water basin to the lagoon.

Pulicat Lake :

Located in the Buckingham canal that stretched from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh and Marakkanam in Tamilnadu, pulicat lake was once once a prominent port of south east coast for cotton export which attracted the Arabs in 700AD, Europeans in 1502 and Japanese in 1619 in AD.
