CONTEXT:

  • Longest serving CM of any state Pawan Kumar Chamling-led Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) lost after 25 years to Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in the state Assembly elections.
  • In the 32-member assembly, SKM gained majority by winning 17 seats, while SDF won 15.
  • Notably, in 2009 Assembly elections, SDF had won all 32 seats in the state.
