CONTEXT

• India and the Maldives have agreed to launch a passenger-cum-cargo ferry service between Kochi and the Maldivian capital Male via Kulhudhuffushi atoll.
• The initiative was announced during PM Narendra Modi’s 2-day state visit to the Indian Ocean archipelago.
• A MoU was signed between the two sides for the establishment of passenger and cargo services by sea.
